Advanced Fiction Workshop

Advanced | Fiction

A natural continuation for graduates of Writing a Novel, or a great support group for writers who need to really get their head down and get to the end, this weekly six-month course is all about reaching your goal.

The application deadline for this course is midnight on Thursday 31 December 2020.

This course is selective, so you`ll need to apply. For more information, click here.

The application deadline was
1st January 2021

Sustained, rigorous and constructive feedback on your work with a brilliant tutor is the absolute core of the Faber Academy experience. This course offers just that. You won’t study dialogue or set texts or the elements of writing fiction – you’ll have a grasp of those things already, and be ready to knuckle down and whip your draft into shape. The Advanced Fiction Workshop will consist of you and up to nine fellow workshoppers getting down to business and working towards the next draft of your novel, bringing newly written or edited material to be critiqued every month. In the meantime, the online classroom will offer prompts and structure to help you to focus your writing time, and ensure you get the most out of the fortnightly sessions.

The workshop will be led by Gillian Slovo, a hugely experienced tutor and acclaimed writer of thirteen novels, a celebrated memoir and several plays.

If you are close to finishing a first draft and, for your next, are looking for honest answers to difficult questions – 'does this work?’; ‘ how do I know what to keep and what to discard?’; 'how should I change this to make it even better?' – then apply today to join Gillian and a group of dedicated fellow novelists online for six months of hard, rewarding work.

*Please note: although we’ll aim to hold this course at the Faber headquarters in Bloomsbury House, it may become necessary to hold some of it online.*

Applying is easy. Simply click 'Apply Now' at the bottom of this screen, log in to your account (or create a new one) and you'll be asked to upload up to three documents. As it happens, we only need two: a 2000-word excerpt from your manuscript, and a cover letter of no more than a page, detailing where you're coming from writing-wise, what it is you're writing about, where you've got to with your novel and what you're hoping to get out of the course. Make sure you get that done before midnight on the day listed below. Any questions, get in touch.
